TERRA Environmental Research Institute opened its doors this past August and is Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ archetype for the schools of tomorrow. The high school boasts a capacity for more than 1,800 students.
TERRA promotes a green culture among its student body, teaching an ecologically-conscience curricula through three academies: Environmental Research and Field Studies, Biomedical Research and Engineering Technology and Robotics. The school’s own structure contains environmentally friendly effects. The main entrance and lobby showcase real-time information regarding TERRA’s energy spending. Motion sensors for lighting are located around the institute. A green house where students grow their very own crops is planned to be the eventual source for the creation of a student-run farmer’s market, offering organic items for neighboring homes and businesses throughout the community.
TERRA Environmental Research Institute is located at 11005 S.W. 84th Street, Miami, Florida and is a Miami-Dade County Public School.
More Information:
“Environmental Research and Field Studies will focus but not be limited to seeking solutions to contemporary environmental problems in the community. Students will perform field studies, observations and laboratory investigations in natural preserved areas in natural habitats including but not limited to the school site. Students will study current environmental political issues through research, analysis and debate.” (Source: TERRA web site)

Great write up, i’d love to hear more on their endeavors and “growth”. It’s never too late to start turning around and pushing green, sure it’s a bit more costly but in the long run it’s such a healthy choice.
Thanks for bringing this up, green is a choice for all and teaching those style classes and life lessons at such a base education level for any being is just awesome! GO TERRA

I agree! Embedding the green mentality into them at a young age will create future green life-habits, which is the best proponent for change that we have.

Wow, i am so glad so many people are interested and agree with this school’s goal. I love it the school. It offers academies you do not see very often. It is expensive to keep teaching and running academies such as Robotics and Biomedical but considering the effects of properly educating the leaders of tomorrow with the goal of saving the world, it is a very small price to pay. The school is populated by only freshmen at the moment, but those very freshmen dedicated and devoted enough to this institute, will be the ones who carve the future of humanity out of the education they obtain through this school. It is not going to take long before this school is known throughout the entire world, so to this school i cheer. GO TERRA!

I totally agree, Michael. I have had the pleasure of visiting this school and not only is it aesthetically pleasing, it is Earth-friendly, too. The kids truly learn values they will need in their futures. It’s wonderful!
